Devlog #11 - Progress (or lack thereof) update - April 2024

Alright guys, efforts must be redoubled. I was making great progress in January and February when I was doing regular morning devstreams focused on artwork, but my (paying) work started cutting into that, then I had to deal with taxes and spring chores. I tried evening dev streaming but it’s not for me. Then I went off on my alternate engine side project. I’ll come back to that but I don’t have time for it now.

I have made one big decision: Godot is not quite working for me for a 3D RPG of this scale, thus I won’t be sinking any more time into Godot-specific work, especially the game GUI. That still leaves worldbuilding, characters, dialogue, quests, the magic system, shaders, and tons of artwork.

This is what I’m trying to focus on now:

  • Setting the stage
    • Iconic Synthnostate retro-futurism
    • 80’s aesthetic because everyone loves that now - and I was an 80’s kid
    • Dark tenebrism & tech-noir atmosphere
    • Building out the city and inner suburb areas where the game begins and where this aesthetic is most prominent
  • Attractive characters (more important than variety at this stage of development)
    • Goth girls and tomboys (a little fan-service for our nascent fanbase)
    • Badass cyberpunk/metal dudes
    • General artwork cleanup and decluttering
    • Standardize a simple outfit system for now
  • Ample opportunities for vampiric gameplay
    • Easy prey: atomized individuals in a postmodern safety-culture hellscape
    • Hedonistic, materialistic, reckless lifestyles
    • Others desperate to escape the soul-crushing dystopia
